How To Do A Treble Crochet

Hi friends! Welcome to Hook That Thread! Today I decided to write about how to do one of the basic stitches -Treble crochet also known as a Triple crochet. After learning single, half double and double crochet, learning treble crochet is a natural progression.

In single crochet, we insert the hook directly in the stitch without the yarn over. And then the yarn is pulled through the stitch. In half double and double crochet, we yarn over once, insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over again and you are left with 3 loops on the hook. In treble crochet though, we will yarn over twice before inserting the hook in the stitch, leaving 4 loops on the hook. This is the main difference between double crochet and treble crochet. Do you see now why I called it a natural progression? By the way, treble crochet is abbreviated as ‘tr’ on the crochet pattern.

Steps to make a Treble crochet –

Row 1 –

  • Start with a slip knot and then do few chain stitches. I suggest starting with 15-20 chains. That way
  • Once you have made the desired number of chain stitches, turn around your work.
  • To make the first treble crochet, you have to yarn over twice. Then insert the hook into the top loop of the fifth chain from the hook. Remember not to count the loop that is on the hook when counting the chains.
  • Now yarn over and pull the yarn through the chain to create a loop on the hook. Now you should have 4 loops on the hook.
  • Next, yarn over again and pull it through the first 2  loops on the hook. There are now 3 loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 of the remaining loops on the hook. Now there should be 2 loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the final 2 loops. This will be your one treble crochet.
  • To make the next  treble crochet , yarn over twice and insert the hook in the next chain. Pull the yarn through the chain, yarn over again and pull it through the first 2  loops on the hook. You should have now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the first of the remaining 2 loops. Yarn over again and pull it through remaining 2 loops on the hook.
  • Continue doing treble crochets in the rest of the chains.

Row 2 –

  • Once you reach the end and before starting the next row, we need to make sure that we maintain the height of the stitches for the next row by making turning chains. Turning chains are nothing but regular chain stitches and are called turning chains because they are made before or after turning the work. For treble crochet, the number of turning chains required is 4.
  • So do 4 chains and then turn the work around to start the next row. Then yarn over twice and  insert the hook under the both loops at the top of the second stitch from the row below. Yarn over and pull it through. Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops on the hook. There are now 3 loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the next 2 loops on the hook. And finally, yarn over again and pull it through the remaining 2 loops

And that’s it! This is how you do a treble crochet! Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions. Or if you prefer, I’ve a video below for better visual demonstration. Let me know if you give this one a try and do share your projects with me on Instagram. Happy Crocheting!!
