What is a Magic circle/ring?
In crochet, if you ever had to create a ring, the usual way of doing it is by creating some chain stitches and slip stitch in the first chain to close the circle. The caveat is that it leaves a hole in the center. For some projects such as amigurumi, you do not want a gap in the center and that’s where magic circle or ring comes into picture.
Magic circle is a way of creating a tight circle without creating any gap in the center. It can be created using any size yarn and hook. You start with a loose circle and then use the tail end of the yarn to tighten the circle and close any gap in the center.
In the video below, I’ll demonstrate how to do a magic circle and 10 double crochet stitches inside the ring. Usually, most patterns will ask you to do single crochet stitches inside the circle for the first round. But for the demonstration and clarity purposes, I’ve used double crochet stitches here. Once you create a magic ring, you can use any stitch you want for the first round.
