Half Double crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches.
Here I’ll show you step by step how to do multiple rows of half double crochet stitch including turning chains.
If you are a complete beginner, I recommend you start with single crochet first. And if you are looking for ideas for using these stitches, feel free to check out my other videos on my YouTube channel for advanced stitches and patterns.
Steps –
Half Double Crochet Row 1 –
- Start with the desired number of chain stitches.
- Once you have made the desired number of chain stitches, turn around your work.
- To make the first half double crochet, yarn over and insert the hook into the top loop of the third chain from the hook.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through to create a loop on the hook. Now you should have 3 loops on the hook.
- Now, Yarn over again and pull it through all the 3 loops on the hook. And that is your first half double crochet.
- Next, yarn over again and insert the hook in the next chain , yarn over , draw up a loop, yarn over again and pull it through all 3 loops on the hook.
- Continue doing half double crochet stitches till the end of the row.
Half Double Crochet Row 2 –
- Before starting the next row, we need to make sure that we maintain the height of the stitches for the next row. This is done by making chains, called Turning chains. For half double crochet, the number of turning chains required is 2.
- After the last stitch of the row 1, chain 2 and turn the work around to start the next row.
- Yarn over and insert the hook under both loops at the top of the second stitch. We skipped the first stitch because, for half double crochet, the turning chain is considered as a first stitch.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through to create a loop on the hook. Now you have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over again and pull it through all the 3 loops on the hook to create the 2nd half double crochet of row 2.
- Continue doing half double crochet to finish the row.
