Double crochet stitch is one of the basic crochet stitches.
Here I’ll show you step by step how to do multiple rows of double crochet including turning chains. Double crochet is one of the basic crochet stitches. The abbreviation on a pattern for double crochet is ‘dc’.
If you are a complete beginner, I recommend you start with single crochet first, followed by half double crochet. And if you are looking for ideas for using these stitches, feel free to check out my other videos on my YouTube channel for advanced stitches and patterns.
Steps –
Double Crochet Row 1 –
- Start with the desired number of chain stitches.
- Once you have made the desired number of chain stitches, turn around your work.
- To make the first double crochet, yarn over and insert the hook into the top loop of the fourth chain from the hook.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through to create a loop on the hook. Now you should have 3 loops on the hook.
- Now, Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through remaining 2 loops on the hook. And that is your first double crochet.
- Next, yarn over again and insert the hook in the next chain , yarn over , draw up a loop, yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through remaining 2 loops on the hook.
- Continue doing double crochet stitches till the end of the row.
Double Crochet Row 2 –
- Before starting the next row, we need to make sure that we maintain the height of the stitches for the next row. This is done by making chains, called Turning chains. For double crochet, the number of turning chains required is 3.
- After the last stitch of the row 1, chain 3 and turn the work around to start the next row.
- Yarn over and insert the hook under both loops at the top of the second stitch. We skipped the first stitch because, for double crochet, the turning chain is considered as a first stitch.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through to create a loop on the hook. Now you have 3 loops on the hook.
- Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through remaining 2 loops on the hook to create the 2nd double crochet of row 2.
- Continue doing double crochet stitches to finish the row.
