Hi there! Welcome to Hook That Thread! Today I am going to show you how to crochet a pumpkin amigurumi style. Just in time and perfect for your fall decorations!
Amigurumi is a Japanese art of making stuffed animals using either Crochet or knitting. Since all amigurumi projects start with making some form of a ball, I thought why not use the same technique to make a pumpkin. So here you go!
This pumpkin starts just like any amigurumi ball. But then I have made some changes to make it look like a pumpkin, including the ridges that go on pumpkins from top to bottom. This would be a perfect project to start learning amigurumi if you have not tried it before.
Construction of the Pumpkin –
Like most amigurumi projects, I’ve started this pumpkin with a magic circle, followed by multiple rounds of single crochets to create the base of the pumpkin. The detailed instructions for each of the rounds is in the pattern below. Pay close attention to the number of stitches in each of the rounds as the stitches are increased gradually to keep the base as flat as possible. Also for each of the rounds, don’t forget to mark the first stitch.
Now back to the construction of the pumpkin. When you think of a pumpkin there 4 parts that you need to consider –
- Base of the pumpkin
- Sides of the pumpkin
- Top of the pumpkin
- Stem of the pumpkin
As mentioned before, the base of the pumpkin is made using multiple rounds of single crochets and by increasing the number of stitches in each of the round. The increase is done by making 2 single crochets in one stitch. The base is then followed by multiple rounds of back loop only single crochet and knit, a.k.a. waistcoat, stitches, and without increasing the number of stitches. Similarly, the top of the pumpkin is made by decreasing the stitches gradually. Finally the pumpkin is stuffed with polyester fiberfill and shaped to look like a pumpkin. Please see the video below for detailed step-by-step instructions and follow along.
And that’s it! You can make the stem and attach it to the pumpkin as I did or you can glue a small stick to the top of the pumpkin for more natural look. This was a quick project for me and I am sure you too can finish it in a few hours.
Have you crocheted a pumpkin before? How did you do it? Let me know in the comments below. And if you try this pattern, please share with me on Instagram or Pinterest!
