Easy Crochet Granny Square

Looking for an easy crochet granny square pattern with a video tutorial? If so, you’re in the right place! Not only is this quick and easy granny square one of my favorite go-to patterns, but it’s also simple to learn, great for scrap yarn, and endlessly versatile. In this post, I’ll share everything you need to make your own, including tips, tools, and step-by-step instructions.

To begin with, this classic granny square is worked in the round using simple stitches like chains, double crochets, and treble crochets. What makes it unique, however, is the treble crochet cluster, which adds beautiful texture and really makes the design pop. If you haven’t tried clusters before, don’t worry! In fact, they’re easier than they look, and I’ve included a video to walk you through every step. So, whether you’re just starting out or looking to mix things up a bit, this pattern is a great opportunity to learn new stitches.
Plus, it’s great for all kinds of projects from cozy blankets, wall hangings, to cute bags, and beyond!

Customization and Tips –

One of the best things about granny squares is how easy they are to make your own! Whether you want to play with colors or add special details, these simple customization ideas and handy tips will help take your squares to the next level.

Customization –

  • Mix & Match Colors: To start, play with different color combinations to create unique, eye-catching squares. Contrasting or complementary palettes can make your design really stand out.
  • Use Different Yarn Weights: Alternatively, try using lighter or chunkier yarns. This changes the texture and size of your squares, allowing for a variety of creative applications.
  • Add Beads or Embellishments: For a personalized touch, sew on beads, buttons, or even small charms. These little details can add visual interest and make each square one of a kind.
  • Experiment with Borders: Finally, finish your squares with decorative borders like scalloped edges, picots, or a simple single crochet round. It’s an easy way to add polish and style.

Tips –

  • Keep Your Tension Even: First and foremost, consistent tension helps your granny squares lay flat and look neat.
  • Count Your Stitches: Additionally, double-check your stitch count in each round to prevent accidental increases or decreases that can throw off your square’s shape.
  • Use Stitch Markers: For easier tracking, use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round—especially helpful in more intricate patterns.
  • Weave in Ends Neatly: Take your time weaving in yarn tails. A tidy finish not only looks better but also ensures durability.
  • Block Your Squares: Lastly, lightly blocking your finished squares can even out your stitches and give your work a more professional look.
